Staying Motivated in Winter

In this week’s Mindset Monday, Josie Hofman shared why winter can impact our mood and motivation — from reduced sunlight affecting brain chemistry to common “winter slump” symptoms like low energy and poor sleep. Her tips include getting 10–15 minutes of morning light, moving your body, starting with small tasks, and using positive self-talk to train your mind. She also encouraged listeners to stay accountable and connect with their purpose to build lasting motivation.

Managing Stress

In this Mindset Monday, Josie Hofman discussed how stress is a natural physical and psychological response to pressure, but if left unmanaged, it can affect our mood, productivity, and long-term health. Common signs include worry, poor concentration, headaches, fatigue, and social withdrawal.
Josie’s key strategies include naming the emotion, practising mindful breathing, planning with intention, taking regular breaks, staying aware of self-talk, and connecting with supportive people. She emphasised building healthy daily routines - sleep, nutrition, exercise to strengthen resilience before stress strikes, and reminded listeners to be kind to themselves during high-pressure times.

Building Mental Fitness

In this Mindset Monday, Josie Hofman explored the concept of mental fitness, treating the brain like a muscle that can be trained through healthy daily habits. Being mentally fit means staying focused under pressure, bouncing back from setbacks, adapting to change, and recovering well after stress.

Josie shared practical exercises including pausing and reflecting (through journaling or mindful breathing), reframing negative thoughts into more constructive ones, and building consistency with small daily practices. She emphasised that mental fitness is accessible to everyone, and even small, intentional steps can strengthen resilience and support long-term wellbeing.

Preventing Burnout

In this session, Josie Hofman explained that burnout is more than tiredness, it’s ongoing emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. Early signs include constant fatigue, irritability, withdrawal, and loss of motivation. To prevent burnout, Josie recommends the “3 Rs” Recover, Rest, Reset through breaks, mindfulness, and fun, while also setting boundaries, limiting tech, reconnecting with purpose, and supporting wellbeing with exercise, nutrition, and sleep.
