Looking After Your Mental Health During Uncertain Times
In this ABC interview with Kristy, I spoke about how rising living costs and global uncertainty can affect our mental health. When we’re constantly exposed to worrying news and financial pressure, anxiety can build quickly.
One of the most important things we can do is limit how often we check the news, focus on what we can control, and stay connected with others. By planning ahead, taking time to pause and breathe, and remembering that we are a resilient community, we can navigate uncertainty with greater calm and perspective.
My Thoughts on Screen Time and Kids’ Mental Health
I recently joined ABC New England to talk about a new study linking excessive screen time in kids to anxiety, aggression, and poor sleep. As a mental health consultant, I wasn’t surprised, I've seen firsthand how screen time can affect young people, especially when it’s used as a way to cope with emotions. Video games, in particular, can be overstimulating. I encouraged parents to set limits, create calming bedtime routines, and most importantly, model healthy habits ourselves. It’s not about cutting screens completely, it’s about using them in ways that support our kids' wellbeing.
The Care Squeeze
In this conversation with ABC New England North West, I spoke about a topic close to my heart, the emotional toll of being part of the "sandwich generation." If you're caring for aging parents while also raising kids, you're not alone. I shared some of the mental health challenges people in this position face, like burnout, overwhelm, and isolation - and offered some practical ways to look after yourself. It’s a powerful and honest chat about the invisible load so many are carrying, and why it’s okay to ask for help.
Exams Don’t Define You
As students move from the excitement of graduation to the pressure of HSC exams, support from parents, friends, and caregivers is vital. While exams can feel overwhelming, reminding students that the HSC isn’t the “be all and end all” helps them keep perspective. Encouragement, calm routines, and practical strategies like the “hour of power” (focused study with regular breaks) boost effectiveness, while healthy food, exercise, laughter, and fun restore balance. Success in life isn’t defined by exam results, and sharing stories of alternative pathways shows there are many ways forward.
